A connector is a simple device used to connect two cables electrically or to facilitate routing of cables in different directions through a junction box. Connectors are made in large variety to receive cables of different types and wire dimensions. This is a necessary device in any electrical installation where safety is of prime importance, specifically against short circuits.
A connector within a junction box receives the cable at one end. Terminals are provided in it in such a manner that power can be routed in multiple cables coupling to it. The insulating material used in the connectors is appropriate to the operating voltage, so that there is no insulation break down to cause a short circuit. Most connectors are made in matching pairs with the matching part called the header.
