LED is the most commonly used component in the lighting and illumination industry. LED is an acronym for a Light Emitting Diode. Although invented as early as 1920s, its practical use came to be recognized only by the end of the 1960s. It was not used initially for public lighting rather it was used in the early calculators and watches. The use of LED for general illumination has come about a result of global warming concerns and the need for limiting heat emitted from light producing devices. Lamps with LEDs now replace the CFL, which itself was developed for replacing incandescent lamps. Several times the efficiency of CFL and a life of nearly 50,000 hours have made manufacturers turn to LED lamps in a big way.
